UK Axe Thrower Interview: Tora The Axeplora

Tora, an axe thrower, holding a shake bottle and an axe.

Hello friends! It's the Man with the most C’s coming at you live and direct with the first interview of my blogging career. We are tuning in with Amy aka ‘Tora’ hailing from the midlands. Let's not waste any time, straight into it!

TELL US A FUN FACT ABOUT YOU

Usually when people ask me this I say I’m an axe thrower but I feel like this won’t work here, I’ll be boring and say giraffes are my fave animal!

WHAT'S YOUR AXE ORIGIN STORY?

I went to a social throw a good few years ago at Whistlepunks for a friends birthday, then went to a local one with my family for my birthday a few years later at Lumberjaxs in Tamworth and then from there found out about leagues, a couple of my friends joined before me and invited me along and I jumped straight in! I threw at Lumberjaxs for about a year, then had a bit of a career break and now I’m based at Axecape!

WHY DO WE CALL YOU TORA?

Basically, my dog Margo (my logo inspiration) has a white patch on her chest shaped like a lightning bolt, I wanted something thunder related so we could be thunder and lightning, and found in google Tora is derived from Thor - god of thunder so that’s the name I went with! Although there’s a fair few people who think I should change it to panic!

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE AXE MEMORY?

(Dear reader, note that I , Badger, left the UK spelling of favorite when posting this. It feels very international, and i like it)

It’s got to be IATC 2023! I’d only really been throwing for about 8 months but jumped straight into going to Canada, I’d said I wasn’t going to compete but somehow got convinced to participate in under 55s! I remember throwing and thinking I won’t last long, and every game I was thinking this was my last one, and I somehow made it to the top 4!! I was so shocked and so proud of myself! Otherwise my fave memories are just being idiots with my axe fam, playing stupid games and trying to do trick shots I’ll never use haha!

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE THROWER?

This is a tough one because there are so many! There are a few people close to me who have really helped me progress and get better, but then there are so many people who have such a unique throw that I just love to watch!! I'm not sure I could name one person to be honest! But honourable mention to maws for being the one to teach me the most and work with me for hours to try and improve!!

WHAT AXES ARE YOU THROWING?

My main there’s are a warriors sleeper (with my axe etching bull terrier on the back!) an ace hammer with a northern axe works handle and my big axe is a boring old draper haha!

ANY ADVICE FOR NEWCOMERS?

Try to have fun! It’s only axe throwing, I see so many good throwers get in their own head with the pressure (and I do the same sometimes too) but the best days are where I just have fun with the best bunch of weirdos around me :)

ANY UPCOMING EVENTS?

I’ve got Valhalla’s burn battle coming up next week (this week?!) and a Halloween marathon at Axecape but that’s all I have planned at the moment!!

IATF HAVE RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THE DATES - WILL WE SEE YOU AT IATC 25?

- I honestly don’t know! I would absolutely love to attend as the atmosphere is next level!!! But it really comes down to cost unfortunately! If not 2025 then I’ll definitely be there in 26!!

ANY GOALS YOU'D LIKE TO SMASH BEFORE THE NEW YEAR?

like a lot of people I’m chasing that 81!! My game has improved since having a year off so I’m hoping I’m getting closer to it! Other than that I’d love to win a league or marathon but that’s a while away with the standard of throwers around me!

Thank you Tora! Always smiling when axes are in her hand, always keen to try whatever new whacky throw comes her way. I hope you all enjoyed the first of many interviews, if you have any suggestions for questions that you want to hear or throwers you want to hear from please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for reading and remember; It's okay to be angry, but it is not okay to be cruel.

Your friendly neighbourhood C-man.
