A Plea For The Standard Axe Throwing Uniform.

A vintage drawing of a baseball player wearing a checkered green shirt and red striped pants

Some of us have tee shirts. Others wear jerseys like we're part of a bowling alley league. Honestly, I think these are both fantastic options - and all options are, relatively speaking, fine. But I think we've reached a point where we really need to define what the standard uniform will be. You know, because of reasons.

This thought put me into a tizzy, so to speak, because there's lots to consider. Namely, and perhaps most importantly, what would be the most goofy and fun to wear that is equally unique and claimable by the sport of axe throwing.

So here were my considerations for an axe throwing uniform:

  • Affordable

  • Customizable

  • Can be used for all types of axe throwing (all leagues, all organizational bodies)

  • Lightweight

When looking at all of those self-established requirements, a clear winner came to mind:

THE DENIM VEST IS THE PERFECT AXE THROWING UNIFORM

Dear reader, the answer was before me the whole time. Namely in the manner of my very best friend and dad Matt Chapman and, I think, if I remember correctly, the axe throwing powerhouse that is Ericka Gannon.

Now, I don't think I have a picture of Ericka wearing her vest [UPDATE: I DID FIND ONE!], and it's creepy to search around online for a picture of someone I only know through meeting a few times, but fortunately I could ask Chōpman for a kidney and have it delivered within 24 hours, so I have some compelling imagery to share:

First, you'll notice the vest itself doesn't impact throwing, as those beautiful arms are left to move however they want. Plus, there is room a'plenty for patches gathered around in one's journey in the sport.

You'll also likely notice the back is WIDE OPEN for a big, cool back patch and axe name. Believe it or not, the words on that last image were done in post production - they aren't actually there. But imagine you have your axe house's/your own big ol' back patch and your axe throwing nickname there. Golly. Just imagine it. So cool. So strong. Much style!

The best part about it? finding your own denim vest can be its own adventure. Hit a thrift shop, order it online, or find a jacket you're not using anymore and cut it apart. It's a uniform that demands customization and personality.

I guess the only thing left to say is: you're welcome. You're welcome for me bringing this to your attention thanks to my own noticing that cool throwers are already doing it.

Let's look like Bikers who carry Axes, I can see no potential downside to this plan!

The official axe thrower greeting can be holding an axe up and screaming "I'm gonna gitcha!"
